Dr. John Bono, of Kittanning, PA died April 4, 2014 at home. He was born to Frank and Maria (Reano) Bono on November 12, 1920, in Luxor, PA, as the 5:00 AM whistle blew at the coal mine, he was 93 years old. He served in the US Army until attending medical school at the University of Pittsburgh from 1944-48. After completing his internship at St. Joseph Hospital, Pittsburgh, he completed a residency in Otolaryngology at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, and set up practice in Kittanning in 1952. He practiced from 1952-1994 with a return to military service at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH from 1955-56.

At one time or another, most of Armstrong County walked up those narrow stairs just to have him stick those "silver things" up your nose or pull your tongue out further than you thought it was possible or lance the ear of a crying child. He often did this at 2:00 AM because he would always say "Go ahead and tell them to come in now".

He was preceded in death by Helen, his wife of 60 years, and his sister Josephine. He is survived by his children, John (Cheri), Steven, Brian (Karin), Mary-Ann (Dan), and Suzanne, his grandchildren, Trey, Ashley, Grace, Will, Ashley, Nic, and Chris and great-grandchild, Dylan.

Family and friends will be received from 6-9 PM on Monday, April 7, 2014 at Bauer Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc, 515 N. McKean Street, Kittanning.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at St. Mary Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Kittanning at 11:00 AM.

Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery Freeport, PA.

Memorial contributions may be made in Dr. Bono's memory to the Armstrong County Memorial Hospital, One Nolte Drive, Kittanning, PA 16201 and Orphans of the Storm, PO Box 838, Kittanning, PA 16201.
